Public Notice on the Electoral Voting System and Separate Māori Representation on Council for the Westland District Triennial General Elections 2013 and of the Right to Demand a Poll

The Public is advised pursuant to the provisions of the Local Electoral Act 2001 that, unless a poll of electors determines otherwise, the next Triennial General Elections for the Westland District Council will be conducted under the ‘First Past the Post’ (FPP) electoral system and there will not be any Māori Wards.

Electors of Westland District Council have a right to demand a poll to determine whether the FPP or Single Transferable Vote (STV) electoral system will be used for the next two Triennial General Elections (2013 and 2016) and if there will be separate Māori representation on Council for those elections. Only persons on the Māori Electoral Roll would be eligible to vote for candidates in any Māori Ward

A valid demand for a poll must be:

  • Made in writing; and
  • Signed by at least five percent (5%) of the number of electors enrolled as eligible to vote at the 2010 Westland District Triennial General Elections. This will require not less than 295 elector signatures; and
  • Delivered to the office of Westland District Council, 36 Weld Street, Hokitika by 28 February 2012; or posted to Private Bag 704, Hokitika, to be received by 28 February 2012.

Every elector who signs a demand must also set out in it his or her full name and the address for which he or she is qualified as an elector of Westland District Council.

For further information, please phone 03 756 9035. The officer for enquiries is Richard Simpson.

Dated at Hokitika this 5th day of September 2011.
